What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine is a medical specialty focused on the health of adults. As a board-certified doctor of internal medicine, Jonathan S. Leibowitz, MD, PC, provides integrative, evidence-based care for an assortment of health problems. Whether you need an annual physical or help to manage a chronic condition like diabetes, Dr. Leibowitz’s goal is to improve your overall health and well-being with appropriate internal medicine services.

What are internal medicine services?

Internal medicine is like primary care in that it spans an array of health services. You may seek internal medicine services for:

  • Preventive care
  • Immunizations
  • Weight loss and nutrition counseling
  • Cancer and disease screenings
  • Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses
  • Treatment of sprains, strains, and minor injuries

Dr. Leibowitz diagnoses and treats chronic health conditions, such as:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Allergies
  • Asthma

Jonathan S. Leibowitz, MD, PC, also offers annual physicals for men and women.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

Dr. Leibowitz checks your vital signs, such as your temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. He reviews your medical history, asking about illnesses or surgeries, medical conditions that run in your family, and your current health concerns.

The information you share helps to guide his recommendations. For example, he typically suggests a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer. He also may perform a breast exam or pelvic exam. Depending on your age, you might also need a mammogram.

What happens during a men’s physical?

A men’s check-up is similar to a woman’s. Dr. Leibowitz reviews your medical history, checks your vital signs, and performs a physical exam. He measures your height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).

He may recommend certain screenings to look for signs of:

  • Diabetes (elevated blood sugar readings)
  • High cholesterol (starts between age 25-30, and is checked every five years)
  • Prostate cancer (typically begins at age 50)

If you’re between age 50-75, he suggests a screening test for colorectal cancer.

If it’s been a while since you’ve had a checkup, take charge of your health today by calling or booking a consultation online with Jonathan S. Leibowitz, MD, PC, who is board-certified in both internal medicine and primary care.
